A Local Pioneer in Brewing: EagleMonk finds early craft beer success in Lansing

EagleMonk Pub and Brewery is a testament to vision, dedication and the love of craft brewing.

Founded by Dan and Sonia Buonodono at 4906 W. Mount Hope Highway in Lansing, EagleMonk was born out of a passion for beer and a commitment to creating a welcoming space for the community. When EagleMonk opened, there were few other breweries in the Lansing area, making it a pioneering venture in the local craft beer scene.

The Buonodonos’ journey to finding the perfect location took an unexpected turn. Initially considering the 27 corridor in DeWitt, Dan happened to drive by an old party store in Lansing one day. Something about the place spoke to him. Despite having been unoccupied for three years, he saw potential. The building, originally constructed in 1937 as a butcher shop and later expanded into a meat market and small grocery store, had a deep-rooted history. In August 2011, they purchased the property and, over 51 weeks, transformed it into what is now EagleMonk Pub and Brewery.

The renovations were extensive, from tackling the outdated ceilings to repurposing a massive HVAC system, turning a vent space into a window. Yet every step of the process was worth it. By its fourth year, EagleMonk had expanded to include a beer garden, creating an outdoor space where patrons, including their dogs, could gather and enjoy handcrafted beverages.

EagleMonk remains unique in that all its beer is brewed on-site. With 12 beers on tap, two on a beer engine, four wines and two ciders, there is something for every palate. Additionally, four homemade sodas, always consistent in flavor, cater to nonalcoholic beverage lovers. Customers can also take beer in growlers, howlers and cans. The Mug Club, featuring handcrafted mugs by local potter Margo, offers lifetime memberships with larger pours and exclusive benefits.

The pub is more than just a brewery; it is a community hub. Monthly charity donations through the Giving Tap, live music, craft nights, Books and Brews facilitated by Delta Township Library, and family-friendly bingo nights bring people together. Prioritizing sustainability, EagleMonk incorporates solar panels for energy efficiency, an EV charger and extensive recycling practices.
