In a state-of-the-art studio nestled within the Michigan State University Innovation Center, a dynamic blend of technology, entrepreneurship and investment is taking shape.
This free-to-use podcast studio, launched in April 2023 by the MSU Research Foundation, is more than a room with microphones; it’s a tool for connection, education and activation.
Funded in part by the Lansing Economic Area Partnership and Michigan’s SmartZone initiative, the studio is one of many resources offered to entrepreneurs, researchers and thought leaders. The MSU Research Foundation, a separate nonprofit that gives $12 million annually to the university, is deeply invested in fostering a vibrant knowledge community. Through its Burgess Institute Foundation and a portfolio of more than 200 startup investments, the foundation helps create and support high-tech ventures across Michigan.
At the center of this movement is Placemaking Manager Anum Mughal, who calls her work “strategic puppeteering,” bringing together academia, government and industry through intentional programming and signature events.
“We’re activating these spaces,” she said. “We’re getting scientists out of their offices and into the community.”
Podcast studios are housed within several foundation incubator spaces in Lansing, Grand Rapids and Detroit. Available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. with staff supervision, each studio features two cameras and four microphones, ideal for creators and innovators who need professional-quality audiovisual resources.
