While donors of all blood types are urged to give blood and platelets as soon as possible to help restock the blood supply, the American Red Cross is also asking that those with type O blood step up.

Donors of all blood types – especially types O positive and O negative – are urged to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now using the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org, calling (800) RED CROSS or enabling the Blood Donor Skill on any Alexa Echo device.

Influenza has prevented some donors from giving. Harsh winter weather has also threatened to cancel blood drives.

The most critical is the need for type O blood. As it stands, the Red Cross has less than a three-day supply of type O blood that is needed for patient emergencies and treatments.

According to the Red Cross, type O blood is the most transfused blood type. While just 7% of the U.S. population has type 0 negative blood, it can be transfused to patients with any blood type. It is also the type of blood that is reached for during emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient’s type.
