Marathon runners set a pre-determined goal – 26.22 miles – so they know how to prepare for a race and where it ends.

A new e-book written by Foster-Swift attorney Jonathan J. David, “Estate Planning: You Have to Start in Order to Finish,” outlines the value of a comprehensive estate plan and why it is important to have one before you reach life’s finish line. The book will be available online on June 5.

In addition to providing readers with definitions to common estate planning terms, the e-book also offers guidance to frequently asked estate planning questions, such as:

  • Does having a will help me avoid probate?
  • How do I protect my spouse and children if something happens to me?
  • What documents make up a typical estate plan?
  • What happens if I die without a will?

While it is never an easy subject to discuss with loved ones, it is very important to have a comprehensive estate plan, David said, adding that creating a do-it-yourself estate plan using documents and forms pulled from online sources is like a marathon runner buying poorly fitting running shoes.

The e-book can be found on David’s bio under the Attorney Directory at fosterswift.com, as well as in the firm’s Elder Law blog page at mielderlawblog.com.

David practices in the firm’s Grand Rapids office and has extensive experience preparing a wide variety of lifetime and estate planning documents such as wills, trusts, durable powers of attorney for both financial and health care matter, as well as living wills.
