Moore Trosper Construction Company (Moore Trosper) has been selected as the design-build contractor for a classroom addition at the Joseph K. Lumsden Bahweting Anishnabe School (JKL Bahweting Anishnabe) in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. The project broke ground in August and is expected to be completed in December 2017.

The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians states they have used the Holt-based construction company for previous projects. “Moore Trosper has done excellent work with all our previous projects,” said Chairperson Aaron A. Payment. “Additionally, they have been wonderful to the communities where they build, often contributing to local causes to supporting literacy, culture and service benefits.”

The tribe, sponsors JKL Bahweting Anishnabe, as a Bureau of Indian Affairs School. The school is also a Michigan charter school; Northern Michigan University is the charter-authorizing entity.

“The design and construction of educational facilities is an area of expertise for Moore Trosper, having worked for more than 50 K-12 and higher education clients,” said Moore Trosper President Ted Moore.

The over $3.5 million addition is more than 17,000 square-feet and will incorporate nine instruction classrooms, a multi-purpose classroom, a culture and language room, bathrooms, and office storage areas that support the gym. It will connect to the school’s main K-8 facility via a hallway and is attached to the middle school gymnasium.

The U.S. Department of Education has recognized JKL Bahweting School as a National Title I Distinguished School for its positive educational advances. School Superintendent Theresa Kallstrom said, “JKL is extremely pleased that the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians is working with Moore Trosper Construction Company to create a 21st century learning environment for our students. This new addition will serve the cultural, social and academic needs of our students for decades to come!”
