Teams from other Midwest locations will vie for title Saturday

There will be a ton of scrumming Saturday at the Hope Sports Complex as Lansing hosts the 2019 Michigan Rugby Cup.

The Greater Lansing Sports Authority and Capital Area Rugby Foundation have partnered with the Michigan Rugby Union to bring 12 adult men’s teams from across the Midwest to compete for the title. The 2019 contest is the third time the Greater Lansing Region has hosted the event.

“This event is a great fit for Greater Lansing and the Capital Area Rugby Foundation has been a great partner,” said Mike Price, executive director of the Greater Lansing Sports Authority. “Between the support from our local club and our great venue partner, Hope Sports Complex, we’re looking forward to a really fun event.”

Capital Area Crisis Rugby Football Club Head Coach Waylon Sanford said he is pleased to have the competition return to mid-Michigan.

“It’s a point of pride to host this event in Lansing,” said Sanford. “The event rotates around the state, but teams have liked it here, I like it here, and we’re glad to work with the GLSA to play host.”

Organizers expect rugby teams and fans from locations including Detroit, Toledo, Flint, Kalamazoo and Traverse City, to begin arriving in the Capital City on Friday

Rugby matches begin at 9 a.m. and continue until 4 p.m. Saturday at the sports complex, located at 5801 N. Aurelius Road. Admission to the Michigan Rugby Cup is free with a charge for parking.
