TikTok trend causes auto theft mayhem

A viral TikTok trend that led to an uptick in car thefts nationwide highlights people bypassing vehicle security features and starting cars, namely Kia and Hyundai models, with a screwdriver and USB charger.

The thieves who initiated the trend by posting videos promoting their exploits utilized the hashtag “Kia Boys.” While subsequent videos posted by some social media users were meant to warn others of the potential hazards, the flood of videos spurred people to embark on carjacking endeavors.

Unfortunately, the trend was not victimless. Vehicle owners fell prey to auto insurance disruptions as insurance companies in some states attempted to deny or limit auto coverage for these vehicles deemed vulnerable to theft.
