Michigan State University Federal Credit Union is banking on a new branch site.
The credit union held a groundbreaking ceremony July 13 for the new location of its East Lansing branch. The branch will be relocated from East Grand River Avenue to a seven-story building at 311 Abbot Road near Dublin-Square. The space will contain several MSUFCU departments, an intern center, a community room and leased office space.
“We have wanted to have a larger presence in the core of East Lansing, but it just wasn’t possible 15 years ago (when we built our headquarters). It is possible today,” said April Clobes, MSUFCU president and CEO. “This building will bring office workers, student interns, and a new branch to serve members with knowledgeable employees and integrated technology. It will also have a community space for events and for people to gather together to celebrate, much like we are doing today. There will also be additional space available, perhaps retail space for startups or for art exhibitions.”
With an occupancy of 1,241, the new space will bring more office workers into downtown East Lansing and provide full-time and internship opportunities. The building should be completed by March 2023.
“I was most drawn to the goal of the credit union when it was founded: to help members achieve their dreams,” said Peter Dewan, chair of the East Lansing Downtown Development Authority. “That is really powerful. It’s incredibly powerful because that’s exactly what’s happening here in East Lansing today.”
