Veterans Day, originally Armistice Day, honors veterans who served in the United States armed forces. It is a day to recognize and respect the men and women who selflessly served our country.

As Veterans Day approaches, the East Lansing community invites the public to join them in honoring and thanking those who are currently serving or have previously served in the military. On Nov. 9 at 3 p.m., community members and members of the mediaare welcome to witness a wreath-laying ceremony at East Lansing’s Medal of Honor Memorial and Veterans Monument in front of the East Lansing Hannah Community Center.

One of East Lansing’s own war heroes, U.S. Marine Corps Reserve 2ndLt. Sherrod E. Skinner Jr., will be remembered at the ceremony. Having posthumously received the Medal of Honor for his brave sacrifice in the Korean War, Skinner was honored with a black granite memorial on Veterans Day 2013 in front of the community center. In November 2017, Skinner was again honored when a Veterans Monument was installed to honor all those from the East Lansing community who served our country.

The wreaths will be laid by the city of East Lansing and the Lansing-based 1stBattalion, 24thMarines. The Medal of Honor Memorial for Skinner and the Veterans Monument were made possible thanks to the city of East Lansing and East Lansing Rotary Club.

While the wreath-laying ceremony takes place on Nov. 9, Veterans Day will be observed Monday, Nov. 12.
