Cultivating Greatness in the Workforce

Throughout just about any type of business — manufacturing facility, tech incubator, neighborhood storefront — a fundamental line of truth remains constant: Capital may be the toolbox, but it’s people who are the crafters giving those tools utility and purpose.

With so much discussion about artificial intelligence and automation coming to take over the world, employees are still the currency of the working world, which is why enterprise development remains such a critical part of business success.

Across Michigan, employers that are making a difference already understand that sustainable growth blooms the most fruit through investment in continuous learning, clear pathways and human potential.

The momentum is already on our side.

Coming off a year that saw the Great Lakes State rank No. 6 in CNBC’s Top States for Business and a top 10 business ranking from Area Development, Michigan was listed as No. 4 nationally for workforce development in 2026.

In addition, the state continues to serve as a national powerhouse for talent incubation, boasting a record 23,200 active registered apprentices. Programs spanning traditional trades to modern health care fields are proving that hands-on, earn-while-you-learn models transform enthusiasm into expertise — with wage trajectories averaging nearly $90,000 in post-program careers.

Yet building exceptional teams requires more than technical mastery. In an era shaped by rapid technological shifts, the foundation of success rests on soft skills like empathy, adaptability, communication and collaboration. Technical competence opens the door, but emotional intelligence keeps us in the room, inspiring teams to overcome through innovation.

We’re looking at several different aspects of business learning and talent development in this issue of 517 Business because of how critical providing purpose and nurturing passion is to the continued evolution and expansion of businesses.

When we give employees the opportunity to grow, the room to lead and the paths to learn, magic happens. Retention rises, culture deepens and our businesses become more than places where a seat is filled. They become places where the curious mind is fed and the future is cultivated.
