A Sunny Disposition: Meet WLNS Meteorologist Katie Nickolaou

For Katie Nickolaou, weather isn’t just a job, it’s a lifestyle. When she’s not on the air weekday mornings for WLNS-TV 6, she’s educating and entertaining her social media following and sharing stories about her life, storm chasing and even attending comic cons.

The award-winning meteorologist has earned several accolades in her short career and is the seventh person in history to earn a certified digital meteorologist seal from the American Meteorological Society.

“To earn these seals, you have to have a degree in meteorology, pass a 100-question exam and pass a weathercast/work evaluation. It’s a rather rigorous process … but, in the end, it’s incredibly rewarding,” Nickolaou said.

Like a true Michigander, Nickolaou is an avid skier and loves winter.

“In mid-Michigan, we get the added bonus of lake-effect snow,” Nickolaou said. “The sound-dampening effect of snow makes the world so calm and peaceful; I just can’t help but love it.”

About that sunny disposition, Nickolaou admitted she has overcome a crippling anxiety to get where she is today.

“I know what it’s like to be sad, scared and all-around negative; and I want to do my best to make sure no one else ever feels that way. … When I help even one person with my positivity, it makes me even happier,” she said.
