Country Dreams: The rising music star of Cooper Johnson

The beginning of the story is likely to seem familiar to anyone who remembers when the powerful muse of musical revelation and wonder first whispered in their ear.

“Music has always been my escape. I used to fall asleep listening to (WITL-FM) 100.7 every night,” said Cooper Johnson. “I had a little stereo, and when I was probably in the fourth grade, I started doing that — listening to country music every night to go to sleep. I’d actually put the speaker under my pillow and played it really quiet so that it wouldn’t disturb anyone. So, I’ve always fallen asleep listening to country music.”

And if the story ended there, it would just be another commonplace tale about the discovery and epiphany of music that is shared by many; however, for Johnson the notes and melodies on those nights apparently found fertile ground among his dreams and sunk much deeper roots.

The 18-year-old Eaton Rapids resident’s musical star has been on a meteoritic rise, having launched from his first public performance at Charlotte Frontier Days in September 2022 and ascended to sharing a bill with national country touring acts such as Bryan Martin and “American Idol” finalist Colin Stough in a span of less than two years.
