Michigan’s Text Etiquette

How many times have you heard the ping on your phone signifying a text, but you were too busy to respond in the moment?

You may have said to yourself that you’ll reply in a few minutes, but the text is all but forgotten until you need something from that person.

Apparently, that’s the case for plenty of Michiganders. A new study found that more than half of Americans admit to letting messages pile up — and people in Michigan contribute to that statistic significantly.

Key findings:

  • People in Michigan have the fifth most unread texts in the United States, with an average of 4.86.
  • Michigan ranks at No. 18 for the most unread emails, with an average of 8.39.
  • Michigan residents rank among the highest for considering themselves high-maintenance friends, proving they expect things like regular check-ins, calls or face-to-face interactions.
  • Across the nation, 48% of those in the study have had a relationship negatively impacted because of their slow response to messages.
  • Nationally, 65% have lied and said they “forgot to respond” to a text, but really they just didn’t feel like responding.
  • Notification bubbles on apps makes 48% of Americans feel overwhelmed.

But what is the etiquette for text response? said always answer urgent texts right away; however, nonurgent texts can go a day or so without a response. The website also indicated that after 48 hours, you are looking inconsiderate or rude; but never fear, an apology for your lack of timely response should see forgiveness.
