Spring Recycling Set April 27 in Meridian

No need to clutter up the curb during your spring-cleaning frenzy this year.

The Green Meridian annual spring recycling day is coming from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. April 27 at Chippewa Middle School, 4000 Okemos Road in Okemos. The recycling site will be organized as a drive-thru drop-off. Volunteers will be on-site to help move items.

Accepted items to recycle include:

  • Metals accepted include washers, dryers, stoves, water heaters, lawn mowers, snow blowers, bikes and bike parts. A $10 fee will apply if an item contains Freon. Air conditioners, small fridges and freezers and dehumidifiers are accepted at a $10 suggested donation unless the donor is a Consumers Energy customer. Consumers Energy customers who bring a copy of their utility bill may be eligible for a rebate.
  • Document shredding will be available, with staples, paper clips and small binder clips accepted. Documents will be held in confidential locked storage until shredded.
  • Paper and Styrofoam egg cartons. Limited to dozen-sized cartons only.
  • Only latex paint will be accepted. Fees are applied for paint recycling at the following rates: $1 per quart can, $3 per gallon can and $15 per bucket. Keep paint in the original can and do not mix colors. Paint can be liquid or dry.

Unaccepted items include gasoline, oil, light bulbs in appliances, oil-based paints and stains, X-rays, three-ring binders, large binder clips, VHS tapes, and CDs. Event sponsors include Granger Waste Management, Consumers Energy, My Green Michigan, Hammond Farms, Clerical-Technical Union of MSU, Absolute Solar and Okemos Public Schools.

Volunteers are needed in a variety of roles. Those who would like to volunteer can sign up online.
