I know it is cliché, but who doesn’t picture Fathers Day with a man wielding a large tong in front of a barbecue grill? That is why for all our strong, sweet, loving dads we headed to Famous Dave’s barbecue to see if we could save him the work.
I think Famous Dave’s wants to kill you. I mean that in the best way possible. If you want to go to a restaurant and eat piles of seriously yummy food, then you need to look no further. These are like “Hungry Man” servings. By the time Editor Emily and I were done eating, I could barely move. I moaned and groaned for hours. I can’t wait to go back.
Ok, so put on your seat belt. Emily and I ordered an appetizer sampler and the “Feast for One.” That is it. Now here is the avalanche of food we consumed.
The sampler platter had rib tips, chicken tenders, catfish fingers, chicken wings and onion straws. Mama Mia! Oh wait … Papa Pia! Nom, Nom, Nom. What I like about Famous Dave’s is that the meat is tender and tasty, but it manages to not ever be “fatty” like some barbecue can lean toward. The beef tips were perfection. The chicken wings stuck to my fingers and were plump and juicy. The onion straws were a salty pile of heaven. With all that said, I must claim that my favorite items on the plate were the Hell–Fire pickles that were hidden under this crazy mountain of deliciousness. I didn’t even point out to Emily that they existed. There wasn’t enough to share (wink wink).
Next up was the “Feast.” People, take this literally. Our plate had ribs, chicken, pulled pork, corn, beans, coleslaw, fries and a corn muffin. I don’t even know where to start. It was all good. The ribs were meaty, the chicken was luscious and the pulled pork was awesome. The sides were the perfect compliment. The corn muffin was a little delicious present on the plate. There is no way you could walk away from this restaurant thinking you had neglected the basics of a good barbecue throw down. It must be told that Famous Dave’s is the most “awarded” barbecue in the country with over 700 wins. They certainly appeared to have earned every one.

At this point and time I can barely breath. However, being a gluten (for punishment) I decide it was a fabulous idea to order dessert. Should we get the banana pudding? Nah, let’s go big or go home. How about the hot bread pudding with pecan praline sauce served with both whipped and ice cream? Yeah, that sounds like a light and refreshing way to end this tremendous meal. Call an ambulance. The dessert was so rich and decadent that I am sure I expired from sugar happiness. Emily had never tried bread pudding. I am not sure I did her any favors by introducing it to her. It just became one more thing to covet.
Though Emily and I are estrogen driven diners, I am confident that Famous Dave’s can satisfy all of the testosterone that is found in your household. As we celebrate all the amazing dads in our lives, take them to Dave’s. They will experience love filled to the brim. Like our stomachs.
