It’s officially sweater and pumpkin spice everything weather! The haunted houses are opening; leaves are changing and we trade our sandals in for boots. But, before the snow hits and it’s too cold even to go outside, take an afternoon to enjoy autumn. There is pretty much something for everyone.
For something a little more family-friendly and healthy, check out a local apple orchard. We have many in the area like Uncle John’s Cider Mill, Phillips Orchards & Cider Mill or Wyrick’s Orchards, just to name a few. Most apple orchards have pumpkins too. Spend a day out on the farm, enjoying all things pumpkin and apples, going through the corn mazes, and of course, picking out that perfect pumpkin for the porch.
Hang out in nature for an afternoon. Take a walk through the Shigematsu Memorial Garden at Lansing Community College, the Michigan State University River Trail and Gardens and Greenhouses or stroll along the Grand River— maybe even rent a kayak for an hour or so. Enjoy the brisk fall air, check out the beautiful colors of the trees and just relax in the beauty of nature for a bit. Another fun outing to enjoy is a day at Potter Park Zoo. Walk around, still enjoying the beauty of autumn while visiting some of your favorite animal pals.
If you’re feeling adventurous, check out a local stable and do some horseback riding. Maybe even take some of the apples you picked up at the orchard to the horses. Check out a local farmers market and pick up a few seasonal vegetables you aren’t familiar with. Spend a day at home in the kitchen, creating some favorite fall comfort foods and sweets. Like we said before, pumpkin everything.
Also, don’t forget to check out your neighborhood trick or treat times or parties. Those are always a fun time for both kids and adults. Happy autumn! Enjoy it while you can; winter will be here before we know it.
