Tess Mothersell has been in the fitness industry for 27 years. She has trained as a National Physique Committee competitor and placed first in 2008. Along with starting up her own business, Body Balance Fitness, Mothersell also has a new cook book, Figure Friendly Snacks.
Q: How did you get started with your own business?
A: With Body Balance Fitness, I plan to go into people’s homes and businesses to help them with fitness. In the back of my mind I’m hoping I can start my own Pilates studio in my home. In the summer the fitness business is slower because people go on vacation and are outdoors. I’m hoping by the fall I can start moving forward more. I just think it’s so important to keep a balance in your life. You won’t be able to keep a diet if your life is all out of balance.
Q: How did you get to be so passionate about health and fitness?
A: I (have) danced since I was three, I was a dance major in my twenties and then I taught dance. Then I began teaching aerobics, and from there I became what I am today. I feel I am doing what I was meant to do, and it’s where my niche in life is. It’s what God made me to do; I like to move and exercise, and I like helping others. People tell me I inspire them. I’m 51 years old, and I think that’s inspiring to people to know that you can stay in shape.
Q: What do you like about being a personal trainer?
A: I just like helping people reach their diet goals. My goal is to help others reach their dream physique. If people reach me, I can help them and give them the tools and knowledge. I know how to keep people motivated because it is a job. You have to be disciplined, and you have to want it. It’s like a support system, and I’m one of the people in that support system. Everyone needs that; otherwise it’s really hard to accomplish a big goal. It is hard, but I can show people that it’s not as hard as it seems. You just have to know how to diet and exercise properly.
