Mayfair Bar

The rooftop view at the Mayfair.

What is better on a hot and sizzling day than sitting in the sun with a cold drink and a lake view? Nothing. That is why you should head to Haslett’s Mayfair Bar. One of Michigan’s oldest bars, established in 1934, it has all kinds of elements that make for a great summer experience.
The rooftop bar, called Top Shelf, overlooks Lake Lansing. Inside there are TVs, darts and a good-old fashioned shuffleboard table. You can even get your groove on with a DJ on Friday and Saturday nights.
Now, bar food is usually good. It can be hard to mess up a burger and pizza. Some can even be great. A bar can even score extra points if they throw a little pizzazz into their menu. The Mayfair wins on this account. Let me make one thing clear. The menu does not sport a heavy health conscious choice of items. I would say the place is more “fry-tastic” with a lot of spice. However, we will not hold this against them. A good pile of fried or spicy food with a Michigan craft beet can be nirvana.
The Mayfair offers the core components of bar food. Burgers, pizza, fried baskets, etc. Where they excel, however, is in the creativity of some of these choices. Let’s start with the appetizers. They have fried pickles, fried green beans, award-winning salsa with homemade chips and the list goes on.
Editor Emily and I started with their Buffalo French Fries. These were coated in hot sauce and sprinkled with big pieces of blue cheese. They had a lot of zing and were a great departure from a plain fry or a buffalo wing.
I have to say I feel like I blew it by not ordering The Duke. This is their signature burger. It sports avocado, bacon, fried onion and a fried egg. That would be something to tackle.
I chose The Beast. It was a soft onion roll topped with spicy mayo anise, fried onions, cheese and a kicking horseradish sauce. It was a sandwich for those looking to accost their taste buds. I loved it. Even better, it was served with Fancy Fries. A fry becomes fancy when they are liberally seasoned with garlic, parmesan and salt and pepper. Yum! I may have to go back for their hand-tossed pizza or a chili cheese corn dog. I am just saying. Oh yeah, and they have Mexican on the menu as well.
A classic BLT and fancy fries.

Editor Emily went with a BLT (which you can order with “extra pig” if you wish). Served on Texas toast and an addition of avocado at her request, it was a tasty and hearty take on a classic. Emily also opted for Fancy Fries.
To cap off Editor Emily’s and my cholesterol abusive meal, we had Funnel Cake Fries. Yes you heard me. These sweet little gems were served with a chocolate marshmallow dipping sauce. I felt like I had died and gone to deep fried heaven.
The Mayfair Bar may not be the swankiest place in town, but it sure is a local treasure that serves up plenty of classic sassy and spicy bar basics. It is a fun and relaxed location, the perfect place to enjoy a sizzling summer day. However, that sound is not the grill, it’s the oil.
Don’t forget to bring your sunscreen for the deck!
