David Andrews Takes the Cake: WILX Icon’s Sweet Skills in the Kitchen

Forget hearts, thumbs up or wows — if Facebook had a “holy cow” emoji, you would surely see that on WILX-TV 10 anchor David Andrews’ posts.

Part of the job of being a television personality is to be present on social media. When Andrews started amping up his posts, many also featuring wife Monica Harris, humor made him stand out in the form of personal memes. But he has elevated his game the last year or so; and it’s taken things to a whole new level.

Andrews is a baker — and he doesn’t just bake, he decorates with a flair that should get him on a national baking show. It’s just that good.

“After watching endless baking competitions on the Food Network, I thought, ‘I bet I could do that.’ … So, I did,” Andrews said.

He did it simply by learning on the go.

“I haven’t had any formal training, just trial and error. … A lot of cake, and even more frosting,” he said.

Speaking of frosting, Andrews indulged us with his favorite American buttercream recipe.

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 pounds of powdered sugar
  • 4 sticks of room-temperature unsalted butter • 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
  • 2-4 tablespoons of heavy whipping cream
  • Pinch of salt

DIRECTIONS:

  • Whisk your butter in the mixer on medium until smooth, slowly adding in powdered sugar.
  • Add salt, vanilla extract and heavy cream until it reaches the consistency you’re after.
