Local Expertise, Lasting Impact: Meet Rob Buffington of White Pine Sotheby’s International Realty

Rob Buffington

Lifelong Lansing resident Rob Buffington discovered his passion for sales early — starting with a newspaper route for the Lansing State Journal, where he quickly became a top neighborhood seller.

He earned an associate degree from Lansing Community College before transferring to Michigan State University, where he sharpened his sales skills and began a finance career as a loan officer. This background gave him a strong edge in understanding the financial side of real estate.

With more than 20 years of experience, Buffington has guided thousands through the mid-Michigan real estate market at White Pine Sotheby’s International Realty. Today, he’s known for his deep market knowledge, strategic negotiation skills and a client-first approach. He said his responsiveness and dedication help him stand out in a competitive industry.

Buffington acknowledged today’s challenges.

“The speed at which houses are selling is very frustrating for our buyers,” he said. “We can only combat this through the buyer consultation when we really educate them on our local market and the velocity at which it’s moving, and then counsel them on how quickly to move when they find their dream home; and then, more importantly, how to craft an accepted offer once the home is found.”

Buffington said the rapid movement is caused from the low inventory.

“And a lot of this has to do with many sellers in ‘interest rate jail,’ having bought or refinanced post COVID,” he said. “When you’re sitting on a sub-4% interest rate, it’s very difficult for sellers to consider selling and then buying at, in most cases, double the interest rate, which drastically reduces their buying power.”

His solution?

“Education is key,” Buffington said, pointing to strategies like converting a low- interest home into a rental or seeking out sellers with assumable mortgages, which can benefit both buyers and sellers.

517 Business asked Buffington for his elevator pitch:
“I help clients optimize their real estate investments by expertly managing all aspects of their property transactions. My comprehensive approach covers the entire real estate ecosystem, allowing clients to achieve better outcomes while I handle the complexities on their behalf.”
