More Than Legal Aid: LSSCM is a lifeline for familiar in crisis

Access to justice isn’t just a legal principle — it’s a lifeline.

For many individuals and families, a single legal issue can mean the difference between stability and crisis: keeping a home, staying safe, securing income or protecting their children.

Yet for those who can’t afford an attorney, the legal system can feel out of reach at the exact moment it matters most. That’s where Legal Services of South Central Michigan steps in — bridging the gap between vulnerability and advocacy and ensuring that people aren’t defined by what they lack, but supported in what they deserve: fairness, dignity and a chance to be heard.

“We provide free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals and older adults in a number of areas, with an emphasis on preventing domestic violence and homelessness,” said Jessica Maas, managing attorney at LSSCM. “We prioritize vulnerable populations and critical cases that keep families safe and maintain or improve economic stability.”

That impact reaches far beyond a single community. Maas explained that “LSSCM, as a whole, serves 13 counties out of five field offices. The Lansing office serves five counties — Ingham, Eaton, Clinton, Livingston and Shiawassee.”

For some, a legal issue can be resolved with simple information or advice. For others, it may involve deeper research, ongoing consultation or even courtroom representation. In each case, staff are equipped to guide clients — answering questions, preparing paperwork, negotiating outcomes and representing them when needed.

“We always want to make sure the community knows how to access our services,” Maas said. “If you are low income, or know someone who is who could use our help, and reside in one of our five counties, you can call our general intake line at 888-783-8190; and if you have a housing-specific issue, you can call 517-855-2044.

“The need for our services far outweighs our capacity to fully assist everyone; but if the legal issue is something that we help with, we at least provide advice to everyone who requests our assistance,” she added.

To sustain its work, Legal Services of South Central Michigan relies on diverse funding streams, including federal, state and local grants; foundation support; private funding; and contributions from legal organizations, businesses and community members.

Taken together, the scope of this work extends far beyond individual cases. At its core, the impact is clear — when access to justice improves, so does the well-being of the entire community.
