Learning doesn’t have to stop when the school week ends. There are many educational opportunities throughout the Great Lakes Bay Region to feed the brains and stir the souls of students of all ages.


Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art

The Alden B. Dow Museum of Science and Art celebrates the visual arts and sciences by promoting individual participation, appreciation, education and expression. The hands-on Hall of Ideas, rotating exhibitions in the galleries, classes at the Museum Studio School, community outreach programs and special events are all components in the museum’s programming. Located at the Midland Center for the Arts, 1801 W. St. Andrews St. in Midland, the museum welcomes over 50,000 visitors to its galleries each year.


Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways

Since 2004, the Ziibiwing Center of Anishinabe Culture and Lifeways has showcased a collection of unique and rare North American Indian art and artifacts. Located at 6650 E. Broadway St. in Mount Pleasant, next to the Soaring Eagle Casino and Resort, the center’s mission is to teach guests about the Anishinabe culture and way of life through education and exhibits. With its permanent and rotating exhibits, visitors can explore and understand the heritage and culture of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan.


Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum

The USS Edson at 1680 Martin St. in Bay City is a National Historic Landmark as well as a Michigan Historic Landmark. Now permanently moored in Bay City, guests can climb aboard and explore the Saginaw Valley Naval Ship Museum. Commissioned on Nov. 7, 1958, the Edson was decommissioned Dec. 15, 1988. It is a Forrest Sherman-class destroyer prevalent in the Vietnam War. It was brought to Bay City in summer 2012. Overnight lodging on the Edson is available for groups of 10 or more.


Castle Museum of Saginaw County History

Before even stepping inside, you’ll be glad to have visited the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History, 500 Federal Ave. in Saginaw. The 1898 French Renaissance Revival structure commands awe and inspiration. Once inside, a wide variety of exhibits showcasing life in Saginaw County over the centuries are on display — from artifacts of the Native American tribes and the first Euro-American settlers of the Saginaw Valley, to lumbering along the Saginaw River and its tributaries, to the dawn of the steering gears that pushed the automotive industry forward with advancing technology.


Grandpa Tiny’s Farm

Take a step back in time at this working historical farm at 7775 Weiss St. in Frankenmuth. Tours include many hands-on exhibits and learning experiences, including petting the farm animals. William “Tiny” Zehnder started the site based on his love for farming, and that tradition continues to this day. Personal tours are included with admission. Visitors can learn about traditional heritage farming as well as some modern farming techniques while discovering where food comes from and having fun with the entire family.
