Start Strong by Finishing Smart

typewriter

August always arrives with a faint whiff of Sunday evening, the last half‑eaten sandwich of summer; the flannel of fall tucked in the closet; and that small, nagging voice in the back of every leader’s head getting louder: “Maybe start thinking about next year.”

Yes, 2027 still feels like a plot twist in someone else’s calendar, but the fourth quarter of 2026 is already sprinting toward us in its running shoes. Before you can say “company holiday party,” the marketplace odometer will flip from Q4 to Q1, and you’ll be scribbling goals on the back of a napkin that will inevitably end up in a drawer labeled “optimism.”

So, here’s 517 Business’s August public service announcement: Back to Business: Refocus, Reset, Recharge. Think less crystal‑ball theatrics and more spreadsheet practicalities. Good planning doesn’t predict the future; it builds multiple doors you can walk out of when an opportunity knocks.

There’s reason to march into planning season with a grin. The Lansing region’s latest State of the Region Benchmarking Report shows a 10.3% GDP uptick, a 16.6% rise in business establishments and a jaw‑dropping 254% surge in venture capital activity. Innovation isn’t a buzzword here — it’s becoming a habit.

That said, optimism shouldn’t disguise reality. We still have work to do on population trends and private‑sector growth. Which is why now is prime time to ask the questions that actually move the needle: Are we serving customers better than last year? Are we investing in the people who keep the lights on — and make those lights brighter? Are our systems built to scale, or are they duct‑taped ambitions? Are we building a culture people tell their friends about? Are we preparing for opportunities we can’t yet see?

And brutally: What worked in 2026, what failed and why? Those answers are the scaffolding for nimble adaptation. Good organizations use September to December to sprint the year‑end finish; great organizations use that same stretch to design the next racetrack. They don’t enter January with crossed fingers and vague intentions — they walk in with clarity, contingency plans and coffee. Lots of coffee.

So, take this month as your polite shove. Run through the numbers, vet your bets, tidy up what’s broken and double down on what’s working. Celebrate the wins — the region’s growth is no small feat — and treat the gaps like opportunities in disguise. Finish 2026 strong and let planning be your springboard, not your afterthought.

Here’s to finishing strong and planning even stronger.

As far as how long it will take to remember to write 2027 instead of 2026 on all your business documents, everyone climbs that learning curve at their own pace.

But sometime around mid-March is usually a good yardstick.
