For too many, growing old now means going without.
Across Michigan, countless seniors are quietly battling poverty — struggling to afford food, medicine and the dignity they deserve in their final years.
“Even for those individuals who do have people to help them, many families are struggling themselves and not financially equipped to assist,” said Casey Cooper, assistant director for the Tri-County Office on Aging.
“Lack of access to social services such as transportation is yet another challenge, especially for older adults who live rurally,” Cooper added.
With health care costs rising, the TCOA urges older adults to contact the State Health Insurance Assistance Program for free, unbiased Medicare counseling.
“SHIP is not an insurance company and does not sell any products,” Cooper said.
The TCOA also connects older adults to vital nutrition services, like Meals on Wheels, congregate dining, farmers market coupons, tax assistance, crisis support and Medicaid programs to help them age at home.
Caregivers can get support from the TCOA as well.
“We often hear, it’s just what you do for your family,” Cooper said. “While caregiving can be rewarding, it is also emotionally and physically demanding.”
AARP estimated unpaid family care was worth more than $600 billion in 2021. To support caregivers, the TCOA offers three free workshops and the Kinship Care Respite Program.
For those quietly struggling or caring for others, resources and support are available at tcoa.org.
Elevator Pitch:
“TCOA connects older adults and adults with disabilities in Clinton, Eaton and Ingham counties to programs and services that help keep them safe, healthy, and living with independence and dignity in their own homes and communities. TCOA is a federally designated, nonprofit Area Agency on Aging, and we have proudly served the local community for over 50 years. In-home care, nutrition support, health and wellness programs, and much more support older adults to live their lives the way they choose.”
