Voters in November gave Gretchen Whitmer a solid vote of confidence, electing her the 49thgovernor of Michigan. Whitmer is the second woman to occupy the governor’s office in the Great Lakes State and is one of nine women elected governor in the 2018 vote.

According to the Center for American Women and Politics, the new governors matched the highest number of women to serve as governor simultaneously, which was set in 2004 as well as 2007.

In addition to Whitmer, other women governors elected in the midterm voting are:

  • Gina Raimondo first took office in 2015 as Rhode Island’s first woman governor. She won her bid for re-election in November.
  • Janet Mills of Maine was serving as state attorney general leading up to the election, which makes her the first female governor for the Pine Tree State.
  • Kate Brown of Oregon was re-elected to office in the 2018 midterms.
  • Kay Ivey of Alabama also gained re-election. She became the state’s second female governor in 2017 when then-Gov. Robert Bentley resigned.
  • Kim Reynolds became the first female elected to lead Iowa. She served as lieutenant governor until former Gov. Terry Branstad was name U.S. ambassador to China in 2017.
  • Kristi Noem went from serving as South Dakota’s only representative in the U.S. House to being elected the state’s first woman governor.
  • Laura Kelly, a Kansas state senator since 2005, moved into the executive office with November’s vote.
  • Michelle Lujan Grisham took office in New Mexico in January, making her the state’s first Democratic Latina governor.
