PATHFINDER TOOLKITS HELP STUDENTS EXPLORE CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

Michigan students have the opportunity to explore a variety of career paths to the good jobs that lie ahead upon graduation from high school. Many Michigan schools have received a toolkit designed to aid in the exploration of those paths — according to Roger Curtis, director the Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development — known as Pathfinder.

Toolkits were distributed to approximately 2,500 superintendents, principals and counselors to provide districts, as well as career and technical education centers, with resources to help students engage in an active career search using the state’s new award-winning, online career exploration tool.

“Students should have the ability and opportunity to start their career search early on in their education,” Curtis said. “The toolkits will help school administrators, counselors and parents begin conversations about what lies ahead for students and how to best help them prepare for what they want to do.”

Pathfinder is a free resource that helps students and others look at potential careers, along with information about training, projected openings in Michigan and potential wages. Physical copies were sent to Michigan high schools, career technical education centers and intermediate school districts. Michigan Works! locations and veteran’s employment service centers also received copies.

The kits include digital files for all documents and printable materials schools need to help students take advantage of the resource. They also include worksheets, posters and materials that keep students engaged in the career exploration discussion.

Pathfinder was recognized by the state of Michigan with an Excellence in Technology Award for its unique use of current labor market information, longitudinal wage data and other institutional data and metrics.

A limited number of printed toolkits are available by emailing the Michigan Department of Talent and Economic Development at ted-goingpro@michigan.gov. Digital copies are available for anyone at no charge at www.going-pro.com/toolkit
