New applicants expected to begin being accepting as early as February

Through a student loan repayment program offered by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS), health care employers in Genesee County, Northern Michigan and others throughout the state that provide inpatient pediatric psychiatric services will now be better able to recruit and keep medical, dental and mental health care providers.

The Michigan State Loan Repayment Program is funded through federal, state and local dollars and was created to improve health care services in underserved communities. Since it’s inception in 1991, over 1,000 providers have participated.

The priority area for the program has been Genesee County for the last few years. That focus has resulted in 41 health care providers serving the county for two years, as well as $1.35 million in medical education debt relief.

Participants in the program can receive up to $50,000 tax-free to repay their educational debt if they practice for two years in nonprofit practice sites located in health professional shortage areas. This year’s application period is Feb. 4 – 8.

For the 2019 application period, the top priorities are:

  • Providers serving Genesee County.
  • Northern Michigan obstetric providers.
  • Inpatient pediatric psychiatrists.

Primary care doctors, doctors of osteopathic medicine, nurse practitioners and physician assistants who provide pediatric, internal medicine, family medicine, obstetric services or psychiatric care are eligible health care providers. Certified nurse midwives, dentists and master’s level clinical social workers who provide clinical counseling are also eligible for the program.
