If you haven’t dropped by the Y recently, why not?

If you visit any of the Lansing-area YMCA facilities, you’ll see some upgrades like a new roof at the Oak Park and Parkwood locations; however, the new look is more noticeable at the Westside YMCA location, 3700 Old Lansing Road in Lansing.

The parking lot had its issues addressed. New free weights; exercise machines; and a renovated sports court ready for pickleball, soccer and other floor activities are among the amenities. A special highlight is the Trackman golf simulator, featuring two bays with a seating area and a couple of televisions for even more golf.

“In the last year-and-a-half, we’ve done more updates than in the last 20-plus years,” said President and CEO Casey Thompson.

Thompson greets staff with an enthusiastic hello and calls each employee by name. She’ll even notice if you have a new hairstyle and offer a warm compliment. The welcoming atmosphere is found throughout the facility with the friendly camaraderie between staff and members of the Westside Y.

“Although like many other entities, we are still reeling with the effects of COVID. However, we as the Y are making families a priority,” Thompson said. “We are providing as many opportunities as we can. We joyfully serve our community. That is the power of the Y. We don’t turn anyone away from the inability to pay. We provide financial assistance for all programs and for membership.”

Thompson began her journey at the Westside Y kids’ gym. She was going to school for kinesiology. Searching through the newspaper, she found a job working with kids with large motor movements. It was then she fell in love with the Y.

She went to Central Michigan University, came back and worked at the Y again for fun.

“Every day I get to come to work. I’m sad on Fridays. When I come back, it’s like you’re with your friends and family again,” Thompson said.

She invited everyone to visit and rediscover what the Y offers the community.

“We are not the same Y that you saw before. It’s worth stopping in and seeing the new amenities,” she said.
